When Small Businesses Learn to Prevent Crises: The European Journey of OITBC-MSMEs

The pandemic, rising energy costs, and geopolitical tensions have presented micro and small enterprises with increasingly complex challenges in recent years. Against this backdrop, the European project OITBC-MSMEs (Observatory and Initial Training on Business Crisis for MSMEs), funded by the Erasmus+ programme, emerged with a clear goal: to help entrepreneurs recognize early warning signs of crisis and turn regulatory obligations into opportunities for growth.

The project, developed by an international consortium including CE Consulting (Spain), Grupo Oporto Forte (Portugal), Casartigiani Arezzo (Italy), and Global Business Group (Bulgaria), focused on training and monitoring business crisis phenomena. Its central idea was both simple and ambitious: to provide micro and small enterprises with practical tools, up-to-date knowledge, and training pathways capable of making even the most complex regulations, such as EU Directive 2019/1023 on restructuring and insolvency, accessible and understandable.

A key milestone was a series of virtual seminars held in the four partner countries. Economists, legal experts, business consultants, and sustainability specialists translated legal and financial concepts into clear, practical guidance for everyday business life. The response was strong: dozens of entrepreneurs, consultants, and students took part with high levels of engagement. Feedback surveys speak for themselves: over 90% of participants rated the webinars helpful, clear, and directly applicable to their professional activity.

This experience has now been compiled into a webinar report, which summarizes participant numbers and profiles, expert contributions, and supporting materials. A document that captures the training journey and remains available as a resource for anyone wishing to strengthen business resilience.

The message from OITBC-MSMEs is clear: resilience for small businesses begins with knowledge and prevention. Being prepared for difficulties, recognising early warning signs, and turning compliance into opportunity means building a stronger future. In this sense, the project, supported by Erasmus+ and its European partners, has left a valuable legacy that can be replicated across Europe.
